Anyway, while I like Mina too and this comic wasn’t that bad, I too don’t like Dragontown and after having to accept manehatten and all its modernity I’d like to keep some misterious mythical element of the show and the dragons, as shown in this episode, were that. So I’ll just shove this in the “non cannon” part of the universe like most of Cook’s comics.

Ah, that would explain it. MLP tends to be one of the only current comic series that I’m actually following, so I was insulated from other examples of social commentary in comics.
 
Yeah, I’ll admit that given everything that had been established in the series up to that point, dragons may not have been the best choice for a civilian minority.
 
Though now that Dragontown is a thing, I’ve actually developed some nifty interpretations about it:
 
In my mind, the Dragontown dragons are quite different than the wild dragons we’ve seen in the show. They’re descended from scrawny newborn whelps who were abandoned by their wild dragon birth parents and taken in and raised by pony parents. As a result, they themselves know nothing of wild dragon culture (like how Spike didn’t), and only have pony culture and the ponies’ limited knowledge of dragons to draw from. Eventually these dragons sought out other dragons, and a minority population was formed within Equestria, with their culture being primarily pony, but with their own unique elements added to it. Over centuries of time, differences from wild dragons began to emerge: Their average adult size became quite small due to genetics and diet, and their wild dragon instincts lessened due to living in peaceful Equestria.
 
So, they’re a bit of a subspecies of dragon. I call them Demi-dragons. Incidentally given all of this, I’d think Spike is a pure-blooded wild dragon.

I admit, when I actually look back on it, it probably wasn’t as bad as I remember it. But it did drop during the time She-Thor was big and Wonder Woman talked about Mansplaining seriously, so I guess we saw more in this than there actually was.
 
Doesn’t change the fact that Dragons probably weren’t the best choices. Maybe minotuars.

I really don’t think the commentary was as bad (or at least, as distracting) as you claim it to be.
 
I do agree that Luna being demoted to extra was a blunder, especially considering that she’s a title character. So as a Luna and Spike team-up issue, it does fall short in that regard. But if one were to instead treat it as Spike getting a second Micro Comic, I think it becomes more interesting.

Regardless, it’s still badly handled social commentary. And Luna got sidelined in her own book.

Not to mention Luna and Celestia are both aware of the fact that the dragons are led by a dragon lord, and that they can issue a summons to all their subjects. And that Luna negotiated peace between the bat ponies and some dragons (per Luna’s Berrow book) in the west, pre-NMM.
 
Maybe somepony should start writing all this stuff down.

Yeah, I saw that. I really didn’t mind it. I still think she’s a delightful character.
 
Also, even if you leave out the comic that Mina appears in, dragons are hardly unknown in Equestria, definitely not bordering on mythology. The ponies have very little information on them, yes, but there’s a known dragon migration that happens regularly, and it’s just considered just an inconvenience when a dragon takes up roost in a nearby cave and starts filling the sky with smoke from its snoring.
