Ever heard of chekhov's gun? It's a very common storytelling device. And it's also reasonable to believe that they'd want to have magic disabled. And guess what? Bad things happen to people, and if they get to do something important, while it may not make up for the bad things that happen to them, it does deserve positive acknowledgement.
