Nah, I looked up a list on Wiktionary; a lot of them also appear to call it “bassoon” as well, so it’s probably just a matter of proper name and common name (or foreign name and local name) being used interchangeably until nobody bothers with the difference anymore.
Not in France,i checked on Wikipedia because i had a doubt but a bassoon here is called a “basson”
Maybe you were thinking about the oboe which is called a “hautbois” (from haut=high and bois=wood/woodstick)
Poles are also calling it “fagot”.
The more you know…
Also in French, Catalan, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Romanian, Hungarian, Russian, Sorbish, Slovak, Serbo-Croatian, Spanish, Turkish(!)… apparently lots of Euro-types think it looks like a bundle of sticks.
