@toxicitzi
Creating art under peer pressure is inconceivable to me. I mean, I’ve heard tales of it, but I still can’t even imagine it. Might have something to do with my utter and complete revulsion with it though.
And, yeah, not all interests “click” instantly - FiM sure did for me, probably from the first five seconds of the very first episode - sometimes you gradually come to like things through studying and exploring them.
Of course it’s not necessary for a writer to like the subject they’re writing about, but understanding it sure is. Otherwise you’re gonna end up writing nonsense, which tends to happen too often for comfort.
the sad thing is that in horrible mysogynistic cultures around the world, lesbians are treated worse than gays. (they’re both murdered, but the former with extreme cruelty, and the latter can get away with it sometimes by pretending they’re just good friends.)
really at least there’s some scientific basis for hating the gay and not lesbos. though in that case you should hate anal, not gays, for the increased risk of colon damage. not all homogays are into anal, as pointless as that may seem.
@Draco_2k
about writing m/m as a mostly heterosexual, it’s worth noting that if your own personal interest/fascination is leading you to learn more about homosexuals, that’s absolutely fine, so long as it’s done by your own intentions and not by peer pressure. The latter is where that trouble comes from mostly, as well as aggravation and depressing bouts for those who give in to peer pressure.
it’s really no different from people who like the steampunk concept, futuristic sci fi tech, classic fantasy and so on, all those people start off quite clueless on these concepts, just like everyone else does.
@Fimbulvinter
I think you can enjoy romantic pairings of any gender no matter your orientation, assuming the particular story isn’t about you. Same way you can relate to ponies despite probably not being one.
As a writer though, writing about something you can’t relate to or don’t understand is just asking for trouble.
@bico-kun
I know I’ve done the same. I’m a (mostly) straight hetero male who enjoys the sight of two women going at it as much as the next guy, but I also write and actively read m/m pairings because I believe that homosexual pairings are just as worth talking about as any other orientation.
@Draco_2k
well, at the very least though, there is no point moping about it, the best any of us can do is try to steer the conversation in a better direction.
@toxicitzi
It’s often impossible to have a reasonable discussion on the subject one is emotionally invested in. It’s just hard for the human psyche to handle, even if you have the best of intentions in mind. You can certainly improve the quality of conversation by making sure your comments don’t contain any backhanded remarks or offend others… to a limited degree.
Most people don’t seem to bother though. The cruel joke there is that those who don’t abide by kindness and fairness and mutual respect tend to come out on top.
either way, yeah, I think people would benefit more from being a little more yielding and open for conversation, not immediately picking sides and shutting down anyone else. Those are some of the parallels going on here right now with a lot of things and as much as I’d like to generalize too, I do realize sometimes that most people get tired of these attitudes too, these attitudes that tend to pick a side, put on a spear and a shield, make a standing and fight for what’s right, despite the fact that there’s no war going on and there should be no war, not even an intellectual one at that worth fighting for at the moment, instead, it’s more a situation where communication is what’s more necessary than anything, as fighting in this situation will just create a problem where there wasn’t one before, or it will turn a small problem gradually worse.
Idk, I hope what I said makes sense.. it’s just parallels I’m seeing intertwined in different subject matters, ranging from more silly ones to more serious ones.
@Scrounge
It can hardly even be called hypocrisy if you don’t believe in anything to begin with, if your hate is without reason.
It’s not like homophobia is rational: people simply come to hate what society tells them they should - whichever thing is portrayed as evil or repulsive - and gay stereotypes happen to be more often portrayed in negative light.
The background pony thing, I think that has more to do with artists/writers trying to make their work stand out somehow, to cover new ground. Usually it’s hard to be satisfied by doing the same thing over and over again.
Oh, and it’s a classic vicious circle: by allowing a small toxic element of the community to exist,you drive out a small segment of the more reasonable people and attract a little bit more jerkassery, and the process repeats, bit by bit, until all that’s left are the jerks.
Hard to tell if it’s a majority or a minority that does that sort of thing. On the internet, either one can have an overbearingly loud voice.
Depressingly accurate. Always irked me to see fanfic groups and discussion threads throw around harem, lesbian, and bisexual ideas but would explicitly ban m/m for reasons… usually having to do with the largely het male libido. I’m a het male myself, but it made me want to write some m/m stuff just to spite them.
this comic was likely more relevant back in 2011/2, right now, being brought up the way it is, it just feels like a very hasty generalization of the situation. You saw some place some long time ago have this sort of thing go on in bigger numbers than usually, that means the majority of the entire brony fandom everywhere on the internet is like that, regardless what sites they frequent, or even their opinions mirroring exactly what I’d expect on the DA page (most people not being like that at all and your occasional, unavoidable by laws of nature a*hole).
but, you know, fair enough, maybe this was and still stands true for EQD.
@Draco_2k
Yeah, I never understand why people feel the need to throw a fit about the gay stuff. If it’s not to your personal taste, just move on and leave it to those who like it. If it’s because “OMG GOD HATEZ HOMOS”, bashing the gay stuff and not the lesbian stuff means that in addition to being a bigot, you are also a hypocrite. And if you’re just doing it to be a douchebag (not sure how vulgar that word is considered, but erring on the side of caution), stop and ask yourself if being a douchebag(same word) is the sum total of your life’s aspirations.
That said, there’s five seasons behind us, and I can’t help but wonder if it’s still necessary to pair a major member of the supporting cast with somepony one step up from scenery. There are actual male chracters to work with now. Ones with personalities and dialogue.
Oh yeah. I remember the days before Equestria Daily cracked down on this kind of bullshit.
It was depressing.
Lesbian fanfics/fanart? Perfectly fine. Gay fanfics/fanart, half the comment section loses their shit. Goes to show why sites need moderators. Youtube had a similar problem with neo-nazi posters before Google+ fiasco. Not that there isn’t value in allowing people to express the worst of humanity for all to see - otherwise we’d get the wrong idea that we’re good people - but it tends to drive a decent chunk of the audience off to seek greener pastures.
A bit odd with Pinkie and Twilight voicing the position of the bronies. Hetero bronies might enjoy the thought of intimate appledash things, perhaps with themselves substituted for one or the other (resulting in a hetero thought). This wouldn’t be the case with caramac…

Her poor relative Big Mac has been seduced into homosexuality by the demon Caramel, making them both irredeemable in the eyes of the Great Rock.
