Bah, he’s the incarnation of Chaos, as a serpent. Like Tiamat, Typhon, Lotan and others. The Discord story is just a replication of the Chaoskampf, the struggle against Chaos, where a hero (or the princesses) confront a serpent-like embodiment of the world before creation, and destroy it or make the world out of it. Hybrid features are common, because they do not follow the rules of creation.
