Honestly, I’ve always liked the idea that there can be more than one wielder of the Elements at a time. So I have no problems with what they seem to be setting up.

Depends how you see the EoH rules. With Luna and Celestia, there’s two ways to see it. All 6 EoH were “connected” to both of them simultaneously so Celestia could use them solo against NMM. Or it’s just 3 each and the elements can only be “connected” to one character at a time, and when Luna was corrupted, her EoH jumped ship to another wielder, in this case Celestia. Problem with the latter is if the EoH moved to another wielder when their wielder is corrupted, Return of Harmony should have ended much sooner with Twilight having control over all 6 EoH . The hole in Discord’s “you can’t use the EoH if you aren’t friends with the other wielders” plan is you don’t need to be friends with the other wielders if you’re the only wielder, which Discord’s mindraping should force as part of the elements’ “abandon ship” fail-safe seen with NMM.
If the elements do jump ship, during the brief time Rarity was Nightmare Rarity, who was the Element of Generosity? And if that pony were to get corrupted, who would it jump to next? You can do this for all the elements, listing each element and the pony with the best representation to the worst.

It depends on how you see the elements as a conscious force. The fact that the elements are seemingly going out of their way to test these kids makes me think that they want to be wielded by them. Or at least have them as a backup in case something happens to the mane 6.

It’s a better gameplan than spending 1000-ish years being useless between Celestia and Luna losing their connection, and the Mane 6 being born.

Not really. Season 6 is the only time they’ve been unable to save the day.
And why now? Well, now’s the first time potential stand ins have shown up. If you look at the Elements across the series, there’s been a steady expansionist theme. The Box containing Twi’s castle was opened by passing on the philosophy of the elements to others, making it spread. The map itself has been reaching out to more and more people including non-ponies. If the ability to wield the actual power of the elements expanded to include a wide variety of races, all united by friendship, that would be a massive step forward for the elements. If anything I could see that this is what the Tree would’ve wanted. To no longer be contained by Equestria.
