Slick Rick - The Ruler’s Back, Children’s Story*, The Moment I Feared, Teenage Love, Hey Young World and Lick The Balls
From the debut album by the English-American rapper, “The Adventures Of Slick Rick” (1988)
This album is known worldwide a masterpiece in Old School Hip-Hop, East Coast Hip-Hop, and Hip-Hop as a whole, and influential to scores of rappers and producers both past and present. As such, it consistently gets a full 5 star-style rating in many music publications, both online and in print.
Slick Rick was born as Richard Martin Lloyd Walters in Mitcham, London, England to Jamaican parents, and moved to New York City at the age of 11. Influenced by the turntablism movement in early Hip-Hop, he quickly made a name for himself (through a spell in the Get Fresh Crew) and got signed to Rick Rubin’s fresh new label Def Jam. He is known for his impeccable storytelling, unabashed (and oftentimes politically incorrect) lyrics and sense of humour**, his Trans-Atlantic accent (A mishmash of his original London upbringing and his later youth in the States) and an eyepatch on his left eye (He was blinded in his right eye by broken glass when he was a baby). He is also known, among other titles, as “Uncle Ricky” and “Rick the Ruler”. He hasn’t yet released a recent full studio album since “The Art of Storytelling” way back in 1999, though he did make a return to releasing singles with his 2019 track “Can’t Dance To a Track That Ain’t Got No Soul”.
*Possibly his most well-known song
** His bawdy lyrics guaranteed that his records became early bearers of the infamous “Parental Advisory - Explicit Content” labels

The Hollies - I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight, I Want You, I Shall Be Released, Blowin’ In The Wind and The Times They Are a-Changin’
From “Hollies Sing Dylan”, a 1969 convers album consisting of songs from Bob Dylan’s 1960s catelogue, but with a Hollies twist. This album is known for being part of the reason why (former Hollies singer/songwriter/rhythm guitarist) Graham Nash left the band, thinking that the album’s theme was a step back for the band artistically. He had tried offering the band songs he wrote during a 1968 trip to the U.S. that were rejected much to his frustration by the band as too risque. Despite the band’s previous two albums carrying a noticeable Psychedelic sound under Nash’s direction, he had by that point been the only member of the band actually using LSD and smoking cannabis. The rest of the band merely were beer drinkers. The rejected Nash songs would eventually find their way onto CSN and CSN&Y’s albums (though an instrumental run of Marrakesh Express was attempted and recorded by the Hollies with Nash before Nash’s exit). He is also implied to have found the aforementioned arrangements too glitzy for Dylan’s original vision. Graham Nash does sing and play guitar (uncredited) on the Blowin’ In The Wind cover, but Terry Sylvester, who replaced Nash, plays with the band on the other tracks.
Though I love Graham Nash’s music and respect his decision to leave the group for greater creative freedom, I for one don’t find the songs as bad as some have made them out to be. Sure, there are some unecessary orchestral embelishments here and there, but there are also times where the band do put in an honest stab at a sort of Folk rock-ish sound. Plus, Alan Clarke remains full of conviction as a lead singer on here. Still, this album is not what I can honestly call “essential Hollies” by any stretch.
