-“Captain America: BNW” had a solid debut overall against its $180 million budget. Its next test is to see how well it can hold up in the subsequent weekends. And considering how films like “Quantumania” and “The Marvels” did, many are expecting a big drop around 65-70% on its 2nd weekend. Or it could get lucky and drop by way less than that like “Venom: The Last Dance” and “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” did since those films did not have any competition for several weeks. But only time will tell.
-“Paddington in Peru” also had a good debut. It made more than “Paddington 2”‘s OW gross ($11 million) and less than “Paddington”‘s OW gross ($19 million). Based on the first two Paddington films, the third film in the series should end up with $41 to 76 million domestic at the end of its run. It may not make it to the break-even point considering the fact that it has a $90 million budget, but it should find plenty of success on digital and streaming services when it is released there.
-“Heart Eyes” found a ton of success on Valentine’s Day and during the weekend, as it increased 19% from the previous weekend! Guess everyone waited until this weekend to watch this rom-com slasher film.
-“Dog Man” got a moderate boost this weekend thanks to the 4-day weekend. It has made nearly $90 million worldwide so far, with most of its box office numbers from the domestic market. It should easily cross “Captain Underpants”‘s domestic gross next weekend ($73.9 million), but it is unlikely that it’ll pass its worldwide gross of $125.43 million considering how poorly the film is doing overseas.
-“Ne Zha 2” is doing so well in China, that it is projected to pass “Inside Out 2” to become the highest grossing animated film of all time tomorrow. In fact, it is projected to make more than “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at the end of its box office run!
-“Mufasa: The Lion King”‘s box office performance is insane! It is one of the three films to make more money this weekend compared to last weekend. Its next goal is to hit the $700 million mark, which it should do some time this month.
-Despite a boost from the 4-day weekend, “Love Hurts” is going to end up as another box office flop for Universal this year. I’m not sure why they decided to release that film in theaters instead of “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” which has already made $32.7 million worldwide so far. Maybe it’s because of a higher budget ($50 million)? Still, the Bridget Jones IP is more well-known than “Love Hurts,” which is an original film. And original films have not done well in the post-pandemic era.
-Speaking of which, “One of Them Days” has been doing quite well for an original film. This is the third film in this week’s top 10 to make more this weekend from last weekend.
-The fact that WB is pulling the plug on this film despite its great reception is criminal. Not only that, but they’ve hardly spent a lot of money marketing this film since they didn’t think it would do so well.
Additional notes:
-“Kraven the Hunter” has ended its theatrical run. It has made $25 million domestic and $62 million worldwide against a budget of $110 million, making it the biggest bomb in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.
-“Sonic 3” is now available on Paramount+ in the US and in Canada.
-“Dog Man” and “Mufasa” are now available on digital.
