More like because the character have a planned endgame romance. With that said, some writer end up writing the friendship in a way that sounds more romantic. Example are- Beastars, MLP, Gurdians of Ga’Hoole, Unicorn Overlord, Fire Emblem, and lion guards

In fairness, I see many interpret any touching or kind platonic relationship moments as “romantic.” Even touching music isn’t always a “romance trope.”

Heck, film critic Grace Randolf claims the Shadow and Maria scenes of the Sonic 3 movie were “creepy” to her…

Meanwhile, some romances tend to fall flat, at best. Lulz and Amity is example of getting romances right while most hall mark movies romances and books like QuickSilver tend to fumble this.

off the top of my head I don’t recall any story I consumed recently where a potential ship gets shot down that hard by the author.

In fact I recall the opposite. I remember seeing a lot of ship fuel. Things like platonic love or “those two might as well be lovers” type of pairs.

I’m trying to remember if Fern and Stark from Frieren was ever explicitly written off as potential lovers…No I don’t think so.

I remember back years ago i heard everyone talking about how Naruto has a lot more romantic chemistry with Sauske, his rival, then he does with Hinata, his canonical love interest.

Not knowing much about the show at the time, i just thought this was the fandom mememing around and exaggerating thing.
Then i actually watched the show and…

No they were not joking.

NAruto really does have a lot more romantic undertones with someone who hates his guts and constantly tries to kill him then he does with the girl who genuinely loves him. Like it got to the point where they had to make a whole movie fleshing out the Naruto/Hinata relationship becuase of how undercooked it was lmao

Its on you if you think they have undertones like that.

Just like people think Han Solo was supposed to shoot first. Even if Lucas always wanted him to only have done in self defense.

Im not saying undertones are not always there but fans definitely have interpretation that often the author never was writing.

Not everyone is a shipper after all. Especially not authors usually.

Sora’s reunion with Kairi in 2 has the exact same energy of Sonic saying “Hey Shadow, long time no see.” But when he meets up with Riku, literally two minutes later? He’s on the floor, crying his eyes out while gripping tightly onto Riku’s hand, saying “I thought I’d never get to see you again.”

And yet Kairi’s supposed to be the one that he ends up with…

I remember this uncommon perverted trope where a young protagonist hanging out with an older male friend sometimes stumbles across an adult magazine in said older male friend’s house and finds an image of their own mother in said adult magazine.

Basically, “Momma was a Ho” or something along those lines.

I did a look through, and it’s probably Single Mom Stripper or Son of a Whore.
