EQG Rainbow Rocks 10th Anniversary Art Event

My biggest .psd (covid-delayed 40th anniversary piece) is 43.4MB, with 50 layers in 7 folders; it would have been something like 500 layers if I didn’t compress each character down to no more than [●lines ●highlights ●texture ●color ●(hidden)sketch] as I completed them. You Can Do It!

I miss the show so much

A bit off-topic, but your struggles with Photoshop reminds me of this classic rant about the PSD file format.

It’s from 2009 but I can see Adobe has learned nothing.

Perhaps significantly fewer layers? Cluster them by category in different areas of the image or merge some when finalized?

I mean–they’re just layers–not a fetish, not cute little rescue kittens, you don’t need to hoard them. PS for all it is cannot offer child layer support to that magnitude.
Admit it: it’s your addiction, not the program. Kill your darlings.

Have you ever tried another art program? Why stick to Photoshop if it gives you trouble?

Krita is worth a try for example :shrugpony:

I have used a bunch of apps. Like, I think almost all of them back in the day. I used to work for a printing company in software quality assurance and spent most of every day seeing how I could break our printers using weird tricks in Illustrator or Canvas or SAI or FreeHand or Clip Studio Paint or Inkscape - but this is really only the fourth or fifth time I’ve ever tried to color something in an app. Normally I do it with traditional media.

But, I’ve chosen PhotoShop for this because I’ve been using it (or, briefly, working on it) since the 90’s so I’m pretty comfortable with it.
But, this is just the first time I’ve gone through the ‘add color to the things now’ learning curve.
When I’ve done this in the past it’s always ended up an over-rendered mess of suck. But this time I’m managing to pull everything back and am ending up with the pastel look I was hoping for.
Thanks for the recommendation, I’ve never used Krita - I might check it out later.

LOL there’s no way my sequel comic will be ready in time, so here’s a greyscale Aria to meet the deadline.

It’s from 2009 but I can see Adobe has learned nothing
“Learning nothing” is absolutely foundational to the Adobe mindset; if they were capable of learning even the most basic of lessons, Photoshop/CS wouldn’t have been one of the world’s most pirated software suites for nearly its entire existence, and programs like GIMP, Krita, MediBang/FireAlpaca, et al. probably wouldn’t exist. Adobe is aggressive about refusing to learn a single ding-dong thing.

…Obligatory shoutout to the utter mad lad genius who recreated more or less the entire gorram Photoshop interface and all its functions in your dang browser.

I had fun on this event. It was very fun drawing for an event like this one. Rainbow Rocks is my favourite Equestria Girls movie btw

@.
Another Krita main, hooray!
I cannot draw well but all I’ve done has been in Krita, too.
And I know a few people who do great stuff with it, when it’s in capable hands.
Like irisarco and T72B

If it works for you then that’s great! But yeah, trying Krita is really worth a shot

I will post within the next 8 hours (hopefully sooner)
I feel bad for waiting until the last minute.. I almost always do that.. and I get a headache if I work on it for more than a few minutes at a time
I know it’s past the deadline but hopefully it will still count

Yes. I’ve always used Krita to draw shit since I started uploading here a few years ago.

I use Inkscape.
Based. The one thing I hate about it is that it doesn’t allow filled strokes, drawing the stroke and also having a fill under that stroke immediately without needing to dupe it - or is there a way to do that by now?

What do you mean with filled strokes? What would you dupe to achive what? I’m also using Inkscape a lot so I’d like to understand what you’re doing there.

Use “Stroke to Path” to… turn a stroke into a path.
Use “Stroke to Path” to… turn a stroke into a path.
But what you probably want is “Power Stroke”, under Path Effects, that adds control points that allow for changing a stroke’s width along it, add tappers at the ends, adjust how soft or harsh they should be, etc., while still being a simple and easy to control stroke (that you can turn into a path later).
Background Pony #DEF4
I used ponyscape back in the day many many years ago and I thought I remember this not being possible and often creating a shape, then duplicating it and having the lower layered one be the fill and the one above the stroke…
But now that the Twily mentioned power strokes, it might have been that… the shape couldn’t have fills with strokes that are Tapered, for that the duplication and separation was needed, iirc.
So yeah, I recalled that wrong, my bad.
Is that possible now? Tapered stroke with a fill inside, all in one object?

I just uses Paint.NET. I tried Krita but I couldn’t get the hang of it and Paint.NET is open source too.
