Oh, I’ve played it like that before; it’s still possible to have fun, but when there’s only two players it greatly reduces trading opportunities, which also increases the degree to which luck decides the outcome.
It works, just takes longer to play however.
^ This. Though, two-player Monopoly just doesn’t really work.

Eh, honestly I’m really sick of that “Monopoly/Mario Party destroys friendships” quote/gag. I played those games tons of times with family/friends, and we always got along, and such.
People who say that come off as poor sports to me.
