The fact that they’ve made him a well-rounded character in that he enjoys both traditionally feminine and masculine things without being afraid of liking either is good.
No, I don’t think the writers are abandoning Spike. Quite the opposite, actually. In Season 4 we learned of his interest in comic books (in “Power Ponies” and “Trade Ya”), which is about the first thing we’ve seen Spike do by himself and for himself since FIM started.
I’d like to think Spike talking hoofball with Big Mac is a sign the writers plan on continuing to give him personal hobbies and interests, and finally make him a well-rounded character.
I guess I can see that. I feel the same way about Dash.
I don’t really have a “beef” against him. I don’t dislike him, but don’t find him especially interesting either and can take him or leave him. So if his not being in the season or not being in it as much meant more screen time for the other characters or just no Spike focused eps (most of them are among the weakest each season in my opinion and in most people’s that I know) I wouldn’t really mind.
Just for the historical record, what’s your beef against Spike?
It was probably a joke, just like how when they were all joking about how much they hated writing for Spike and enjoyed writing situations that turned out poorly for him. That itself was a very, VERY bad joke, but still a joke.
And I think he meant he was googling for the quote about Larson taking the show in a new direction. I don’t remember that one myself.
Just because they found a way to write him out of the opening doesn’t mean they intend to do it the whole season.
Not that I’d mind personally, but I highly doubt it.
It was during BABSCon. It was talking about the hardest character he has to write. He chose Spike, and it was because he felt he was “generic.”
Like all other premieres and finales, this was probably written by McCarthy. Spike is already the hero in another place, I guess they figured he didn’t need to be there?
Really with all of the new writers that appear to mostly be McCarthy’s picks of people she has had prior experience with, she’s the one that is having more control.
I’m Googling for it, but can’t find it. I remember a statement from one of the cons where they talked about how Larson came back to help push the series in a new direction. I’m assuming that it’s this “going off on adventures around Equestria angle” and that Larson decided that the services of a “generic” character aren’t needed if all they’re going to do is have him stay home and watch sports.
Well considering McCarthy talks constantly about how much she wants to use his character, probably not.
@Background Pony #AD5E
He did call Spike “generic” in spite of writing his character probably better than anyone. It’s extremely disheartening to hear that someone who has so much talent in knowing a character well doesn’t actually enjoy writing for them.
Larson also wrote “The Secret of My Excess”, which as far as I can tell is still the favorite Spike episode of Spike fans taken as a group.
Doubt it.
But they said that second thing?
Well that’s scary. Is Spike getting the shaft this season due to Larson “finding Spike generic” and “taking the series in a new direction”?
Yeah. Big Mac, and not Shining Armor.
The animatic for S5 had him saying he would be with Big Mac doing Hoofball-related activities while the girls were adventuring.
Have spike ever interacted with either of them?
Could you tell me the episode please?
Maybe he can do that one too.
