It’s probably not what the artist had in mind, but this picture reminds me of the “Christmas Eve” story from “Evenings on a farm near Dikanka” book, or, if to be exact, of the scene where local blacksmith rides the devil in a similar manner.

Now that I think of it, this story could be easily ponified…
