Tirek instantly knew how to utilize this much power (villain competency!). Maybe he’s come close to this level before.
 
Twilight Sparkle was on roughly even footing with him, after having only just gotten a handle on it.  
And, if you accept the IDW comics, her potency is as much from understanding and knowledgeable application as raw power.
 
So yeah, there’s probably some serious power level now and power level in time discrepency here.

True but I also got a feeling that Twi was gaining the upper hand towards the end. She was just walking towards him when he was crawling his way out between some boulders. That’s when he used plan b.

The most amazing of this battle is how both Twi ad Tirek went through it without getting a scratch nor getting exhausted! That battle could have truly gone on for like forever!
