Confidence is usually inversely proportional to competence. While your instinct would indeed tell you to trust Sunset, your instinct is also a moron that’s going to get you killed.

Sorry dude, but 10 times out of 10 I would go with Twilight. She doesn’t just believe in her abilities but everyones around her. Shimmer would just cut everyone down who would try to go with her.

While I wouldn’t try to befriend either, if something bad were happening I’d probably go with Sunset. She may be a cold bitch, but her unwavering faith in her own abilities would lend her an air of authority. Twilight would just come off as panicky.
You walk into a library there are two ponies sitting by themselves. You walk up to one, she says she is busy but is polite and respectful. The other one tells you to go away and leave her alone. Which are you most likely to try to befriend and which will you avoid like the plague, and if something bad was happening, who would you trust?
To be fair, Sunset only pushed people apart when she was actively trying to ruin friendships. Otherwise, she was just kind of an aloof loner.
I think she might have a chance at stopping Nightmare Moon- it’d just take her a bit longer than it did Twilight because she’d have to figure out that Elements are literally powered by friendship, find at least five or six ponies dumb enough to believe that guff about the Magic of Friendship(tm), and sneak all them plus herself into the old castle without Nightmare Moon noticing.

And she’s all the better off for it.
And Twilight, despite getting accepted into Celestia’s school, wasn’t made her personal student since Sunset was still around.
