I think it’s more the fact that they wish they were friends with the characters so much, they go with the self insertion. Some people even adding their entire cast to canon and saying they are best friends with the mane six.
 
Although it gets a little tiresome I can’t level too much blame. Just maybe… try to educate them on how to present fan characters better.

Some people like to self-insert themselves into cartoons so they can try and make other people think that they’re cool in some poor attempt at making them believe that the person in the art is him, when in reality, no one can be as cool or good-looking as what some people may be able to draw.
 
And that is a fact some of us need to just realize.
