It’s very often that the artist and the OC designer/owner are not the same person (as is the case here). Where most artists might see “this sticks out like a sore thumb”, the guy that made the OC is too invested in the character to even notice; the latter is often the one paying/requesting.

Why do OC artists always think that they have to be extra-special and believe that it’ll make them more liked?
 
If this guy had been a regular pegasus with a CM that didn’t look like it belonged on a Heavy Metal cover, it would have been just fine. As it is, it’s ‘ugh, yet another Donut Steel’.
 
It’s just… trying too hard, you know?
 
On the other hand, I think the bloodied muzzle looks pretty badass, actually.
