Still say McCarthy believed herself to be Twilight and Lauren Faust as Celestia. McCarthy was all too happen to ascend Twilight because she saw herself as becoming Faust’s equal after assuming control of the show. She just wanted to add more Mary Sue power by having Twilight have a crush/relationship with a Royal Guard since all good princesses, minus Celestia and Luna, need their “prince” charming.
 
I’m waiting for S4 where Twilight ascends for a second time to become more powerful than Celestia (Faust), to prove that Twilight(McCarthy) has full control over everything beyond what Hasbro tells her to do.

No, what I meant was more on the lines of a strong, military figure. (Like her brother.)  
It happens quite often that people fall in love with others that remind them of family. (For the most part parents.) This would have Twilight seeking someone similar to her brother on the assumption that they would offer love and protection. (Again, like her big brother.)
