Not the next movie. just one of the three 30 minute specials coming out. And sunset can still play a role in that one.  
Sunset will always be the main character of EQG but If they’re gonna introduce Starlight to the EQG universe, I think this’ll be the best way and please the most people.
 
A Teaspoon of Trixie makes the Starlight go down easier, as they say.

I doubt they’ll be the focus of the next movie, but it’d be cool if they at least got their own official EqG short.  
Heck, Photo Finish, Lyra, & BonBon did.
 
Besides, if Glimmer stole Sunset’s limelight, (Sunset’s arguably more popular) fans would go nuts.

Exactly. Things change. Sunset may have her friendship diary and be the figurehead of EQG but that doesn’t mean she has to be front and centre stage in every Movie, Special, episode or comic book that bares the EQG Label.
 
So hold onto your butt MR Meanlucario because For possibly this one time only In EQG History, I do believe it’s Trixie and starlight time.

EQG Trixie has plenty of personality to start off with and Starlight will help her develop more. That’s why I think the Starlight special will spend most of it’s time on those two getting to know each other.  
Trixie has always been a shallow and uncomplicated person who develops layers over time
 
And Hey, Remember when Twilight was In every single mlp episode? Untill the day she wasn’t.

1: Of course sunset will be in it. she might even offer them some friendly advice on their budding friendship. Maybe even play matchmaker. But who says she needs to be the main focus all the time? these are specials. Who knows what’ll happen.
 
2: They will “bounce” together as well as the writers need or want them too. Trixie makes sense from a writing, fan and merchandising perspective. Or did you forget the new EQG Trixie toy that’s come out around the same time as the starlight toy?. I’m not saying it’s concrete proof, just that the timing is pretty convenient.
 
And finally, Did you just say Trixie doesn’t have a personality? That’s a deal breaker right there. we can’t be friends anymore.

A. This is Sunset’s series, so Glimmer would need to work off of her, and would be scandalous if Sunset wasn’t the focus.
 
B. Trixie isn’t that big in the EQG series, so her suddenly getting a personality would be out of left field, more so than the rest of the series.
 
C. Ponies and the EQG counterparts aren’t the same, as the series has shown, so EQG Trixie isn’t Pony Trixie, and EQG Starlight and Pony Starlight won’t have the same connection or traits/personality to bounce with as in the show.

Why wouldn’t they use Trixie? The Trixie/Starlight friendship is the one thing about starlight that almost no one complains about. The writers know how popular Trixie is and this is the best and most sensible way to give her some extra screen time. Since each special is it’s own self contained story, they need wrap it in a satisfying matter and it can’t end with starlight joining the main group because it already has sunset.
 
I wouldn’t be surprised if the humane 7 barely got a cameo in the starlight special and the whole thing revolved around just her and Trixie getting to know each other.

I don’t think they would use Trixie, since this is EQG Starlight, not Pony Starlight. I also hope that she isn’t introduced as a villain. I doubt she could lead a cult looking like that.

Human Starlight shouldn’t start out as a villain at all. If anyone needs a friendship chillpill it’s human Trixie. The special may introduce Starlight but it’s focus should be on Trixie and How forming a friendship with starlight makes her decide to be a better person.

It’s the same if she went through Sunset’s route, more so since Sunset is in EQG, and they already went the “reformed but not tamed” route with Discord, so they are very limited in her reformation if she starts out as a villain.

Geez, Did I say I think that? I wasn’t looking for a debate on the subject of Starlight and sunsets superficial similarities.
 
But those similarities do exist and Human starlight shouldn’t repeat the same plotline and character beats as pony starlight If you want her to stand apart.
 
Also, repeating the same reformation plotline again would be laaaaaaame.
