Back when Emperor Grogar and Starswirl the Bearded were young, a threat was made against the City of Tambelon. An army of evil ponies were plotting to take over Tambelon, so Grogar said goodbye to his wife, Rosanna, before he went to war against the evil ponies. In the aftermath of the war, Grogar returned to Tambelon before he heard his wife screaming in terror from a tower. Grogar rushed to find Rosanna only to find her lifeless body in a puddle of blood. Starswirl was horrified before he told Grogar that his wife had been killed by a unicorn named Vesper Shine who was general of the corrupt pony officials. Grogar mourns the death of Rosanna and when Starswirl told his friend that he was sorry for not being able to protect her from a murderous unicorn, Grogar goes crazy, is blinded by rage, sadness and grief before he blames Starswirl for the fact that his kind would murder an innocent creature like Rosanna. Starswirl tries to calm down Grogar, but the heartbroken ram had already lost his sanity and his broken heart had become black as midnight. After attending Rosanna’s funeral, Grogar vows to avenge the death of his wife by ridding the world of ponies.
