it’s simple. discord ruled the world for eons, which would hint at him having ruled the world for easily billions of years. the earth is supposed to become uninhabitable in around one billion years, and the sun might or might not eat the planet before it dies. if it can be assumed to be earth (which considering the amount of human tech we’ve seen, combined with the constelations having been hinted as being the same, we can assume that they are on the earth post death of the sun. using this knowledge it is pretty clear why they don’t let the unicorns control the sun and moon anymore: there is no sun. there is no moon. there are no stars. they cast a spell every day to hide the fact that the universe has died and they are the last vestige of life in the galaxy, if not the universe. they are alone.

I can’t imagine an uprising against a ruler that doesn’t give orders, asks others if they can do this or that.
 
She seems to truly care about those under her guidance and she has put the needs of her subjects before her own more than once.

When did I say that they would do it singly? It isn’t like there’s a shortage of unicorns hanging around Equestria.
 
We know that unicorns as a group can turn day and night. That’s right in the origin of the country, and Luna and Celestia are using unicorn magic, so that’s more proof there.

Unicorns are capable of doing that, and their continued failure to do so is actually somewhat suspicious. Why are Celestia and Luna not having them do their part to manage nature?

There’s no indication in the slightest that ponies actually have a nightmare problem without Luna. Scootaloo’s reaction actually makes it most likely that no one has been patrolling, and that no one has needed to. She had no idea that anyone was patrolling dreams.
 
Additionally, it is highly likely that another unicorn could learn the magic that Luna uses to dreamwalk.

Maybe both sisters are a “backup” for each other? I mean, Luna can do what Celestia can, and viceversa.
 
So, during that millenia, Celestia raised the moon and walked ponies’ dreams, to keep her sister’s duties. If Celestia was to fall, Luna could catch up with her.

There never were any, any attempts were either squashed by Celestia appealing to their needs, or shot down by the populace who are happy with their government.

Celestia is too much of a diplomat to have an uprising. Not counting that she seems very kind-hearted and all that. If there was an uprising, I think she could talk them down.
 
Luna, on the other hand, looks the type that would just crush them under her hoof.
