the ghost of ebert shall rise to review this movie.
is the second from the left humanized diamond tiara?
Yes, it’s a terrible joke. But the pun kind of makes it worth it.
I toooold you it’s a condition!
“Birth defects.”
Regardless of the quality of the special, I don’t expect it to be received well by its intended audience.
Yeah, that’s basically where I was going with that. It would be like if suddenly they made all transformers man-sized and retooled it to be more ‘radikal’ ala Botsmasters. They’re trying to hit a demographic with no current interest in the series or how its stories ‘work.’
Sadly, Mattel has made the demographic want “goffik” things like Monster High. I could see what you described happening, but the thing that I think will affect it waaaay more is the stigma of being “that toy my little sister plays with.” You can’t get rid of thirty years of targeting one demo and expect to be able to market it to another by using the same name. Even if the designs are better made, it’s not what the demo wants.
Hasbro releasing this to theatres, where it can be reviewed by critics that may not “get” MLP in general, EQG or not, is probably the worst decision they could make. They probably could have made it decently successful had they just kept it on TV and DVD. They’re just lucky Ebert can’t review it now.
I will watch it before judging if it fails or not. Not that I expect it to be a masterpiece, hopefully just something entertaining at the least.
That’s the thing though. Hasbro will fail it because it’s trying to capture this market all wrong. That show’s made for all the slutty goffik tweens what want Halloween year round
This won’t work because the current demographic will go ‘wtf?’ and be uninterested by the non-magical bits, and the older demo will be uninterested because it’s not ‘sassy’ or ‘vogue-y’ enough to hold their interest in the magical bits. Two completely non-intersecting demographics (outside of crappy vampire romances), attempted to be seized with one hour-long ‘tv-movie special’
I don’t think if they had horse faces they would be as appealing to the general public. Especially since Hasbro seems weary after thirty years of “tramp stamp” jokes, they don’t want to legitimize “horse face” ones.
They still have unappealing designs regardless of what they’re trying to go for.
As someone who enjoys the ‘86 Transformers movie, EqG feels more like a toy commercial than that.
@Itsthinking
And yet these do not make me gouge my eyes out. Maybe it’s the actually seeing these on shelf/the occasional review on the figures (LoriPlanReviews over on youtube covers a lot of dolls while her fiance emgo316 handles male oriented figures) or it could be the whole Universal monster re-imagining.
The real challenge will be Hasbro trying to take the market away from an established series using a spin-off versus a new and unique idea.
Yeah. Looking at that, I have more respect for the designs of EQG. They might not be the best, but they have some visual appeal and modestly.
I can’t say the same for Monster high.
Monster high
Well it goes with the whole “monster” theme. The toys sell really well but in Equestria Girls’ case it’s weird because well … are they supposed to look like horses or what?
It’s why I’ve always said that EqG isn’t the worst I’ve seen. Look at those lips and hair. One of them is wearing a safety pin as an earring. This might be the first time I’ve seen the thing that came second look better than the first. It doesn’t help that the few animations it has gotten are clearly done on a shoestring.
@PwnyPony
And we complained about all the characters wearing a little bit of lipstick in some of the images…
And I thought Equestria Girls looked bad…
