Celestia is basically a white (grey) horse. They all like to do that. Normally just before you need them to be clean!

All of us have their inner self that we don’t show to the world - inner demons, inner child… And Celestia have her inner horse that make her roll in spotted muddy puddles. Because horses, dogs and kids are clean or happy. Fortunately there are always trusted guards who will make sure that nobody will see Sun Princess in that state, and she will take bath before continuing journey. Some of them however would like some other assigment.
