It’s not more canonically correct, the males of the species are very similar to the females. The only difference noted (though I don’t know where it was confirmed or pointed out) is the red designs on their horns. Apparently, the males have designs points away from each other (such as in this image), and females have them pointing the same direction. Don’t know why that’s the differentiator but it’s technically what is canon.
This is, though, a nicer interpretation that adapts the regular Pony models to the Kirin.
