I mean, I don’t really have much evidence besides Phyllis constantly calling him ‘sugar cube’ and him looking essentially like an off-brand BigMac.
Could be slight hints, or just mere coincidences/references.

Well, you did cite one point, if a weak one. He does want to be sheriff, but considering his first onscreen act as deputy is to steal another pony’s lunch, he’s clearly more interested in power and bullying others than in protecting the town. That’s not what I’d call heroic.

For the record, I do like Sprout as a character. It’s not mutually exclusive with thinking he’s an awful pony in more ways than one - in fact, I like him because he’s so despicable. His whole point is to be a cowardly, idiotic, selfish bully for comedy, to drive conflict, and to serve as a foil for the heroes. I appreciate him for what he is, not what misguided fans wish he would be.

You don’t know what are you saying… He was loyal to his home, to town, to police. He was loyal to his home. Honest? Honest to the dream and job. He wanted to be a sheriff and he said that he will keep every pony in line. And he did. Why would he go after Sunny if he doesn’t want to?
It’s your problem if you hate one character and don’t understand it… Sorry for that. But there are connections.
As for Hitch… Except animals, I don’t see any connections between him and Fluttershy… Hitch isn’t kind like she is and she would never ignore her best friend like Hitch did.

Sorry, those arguments have no substance. You say Sprout’s a paragon of honesty and loyalty, but you’ve neither offered specific examples nor addressed the counterexamples I’ve brought up. If he’s so loyal, why does he try to ditch Hitch at the first sign of danger, such as when he deliberately walks into a unicorn trap to avoid confronting Izzy or trashes his own office so he’ll have an excuse not to go after Sunny? As for honesty, he’s lived his life surrounded by lies and made no effort to change that, and in “Danger, Danger”, he makes up exaggerated stories about an impending attack rather than pointing out that it’s an unreasonable assumption given how little evidence there is of one. Quite frankly, I think it is you who needs to rewatch the movie and rethink things.

Sprout is the 6th member! And it’s so unfair to him how people forget about him… He needs more attention. I see connections between him and AJ. Even by the cutie marks. Applejack wasn’t always honest, but she learn how to be. I think Sprout will do the same and he will learn from his mistake. He was even more loyal. So I still don’t know what to pick for him. AJ or RD…
Antagonist? Maybe for a moment, but he will reform or how can I say. Like Starlight. He won’t stay like this. Here is also Hitch. Best friends, they will move on

I don’t really see the connection myself. Sprout is far from honest: He lives by and spreads Canterlogic’s propaganda without even trying to know the real truth; he often makes up phony excuses to get out of doing things he’d rather not do; and he earned his position as deputy through nepotism rather than honest work. He also has very little in common with Applejack aside from superficial things - they do both love their family, but Sprout’s unhealthily dependant on his mother while Applejack is responsible enough to care for herself along with her relatives when needed. Finally, in case anyone forgot, Sprout is an antagonist and likely to remain as such for the foreseeable future.

I admit I get the appeal of having a new Mane Six with a neat mapping onto FiM’s main cast. I even see why Sprout is such a popular sixth member, since he’s a peer of the Mane Five. Still, seeing Sprout’s entire characterisation and role get thrown out just to match the previous generation is getting tiresome.

Both are often forgotten.
