I think at that point they might as well go totally screwed up George Lucas style and say that all ponies have “Magi-chlorians” in their bloodstream. Princess Celestia uses her magical powers to see how much of a reaction she gets from those microscopic entities inside the pony’s body and turns them into a princess.
Hmm. This makes me wonder whether Celestia and Luna got all pissy about Sombra was because he ruled ponies WITHOUT BEING AN ALICORN!!!
Nah, probably not.
BUT WHAT IF! Male unicorns that become rulers remain unicorns. Females sprout wings, and become alicorns. Rather, alicorn-hood is an X-linked recessive trait that is also fatal to male unicorns, so that they are never born.
Or, perhaps as the picture suggests, male royal unicorns are born with wings, however, they lose them at puberty, due to the new hormones causing wing-loss.
Or, it’s magic, I ain’t gotta explain shit.
Also, that foal looks too much like Blueblood.
actually he is some hybrid between a lion and a carp
I think the best thing this does is confirm a pantheon of alicorns that rule over their respective areas. Kind of reminds me of the mythos of Olympus.
Lord they are gonna kill me someday with these names.
I love whoever named it.

Its probably because of that notion that alicorns are rare and special, and as soon as they start popin up everywhere it fells less true.
Sincerely, I’m fine with pretty much anything as long as there’s an actual explanation behind it, and knowing how alicorns are made, we are probably gonna be seeing more of them around.
You’d want to be an Equestrian princess and you know it.
@And Brother I Hurt People
We don’t know he’s an alicorn. That’s Prince Leon, who was in those awful German comics. The pony in the story is King Leo, and apparently kings don’t have to be actual alicorns.
Oh, and this isn’t canon to the show.
