Sounds like an interesting read, might pick it up if I ever get around to writing something I’ve had planned for a while!
I’ve been reading “The Fairy Faith in Celtic countries” by W. Y. Evans-Went, and a number of descriptions given to the Sidhe (pronounced “she.” I know, it’s Gaelic, they use letters differently) reminds me a lot of the Changelings. In addition to substituting healthy children for old faeries (the Classical changelings), the Sidhe could be a warlike people (or not; some versions depict them as more docile. It depends on who’s telling), could take on any form they liked, and could even change their size (ranging from Tinkerbell sized to well over six feet tall!). Some stories speak of female fae coming in at night and draining the life force from men (like a succubus, but not quite.). And of course, their tendency to take mortals to Faerie-land, either for extended periods, or even forever.
So, there was quite a lot of material for Hasbro to use when making Chrysalis and her Changelings. Really, Discord also acts a lot like a fae as well. As for “The Fairy Faith,” you may want to try reading it. I will caution that this is a very scholarly work, so it is not light reading. But guys like Tolkien used it as reference, and it is fun to see where many of these old stories came from.
Ya know, that’s a good point. Changelings were fairies who had been left in place of a human child or baby who had been stolen by the fairies.
Maleficent was a fairy, though, and in some places fairies were also called changelings =p
