OOC: I hate to burst anyones bubble, but the book I was referring to in this comic was Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes, not Scott Westerfeld. I don’t really think steampunk as a genre would really be a big deal in the ponyverse, cus they pretty much live in a magic-infused steampunk world. Now, cyberpunk on the other hand…

But the ponyverse/MLP universe isn’t steampunk. Its glamorized medieval.
 
Railways to guide and pull heavy wagons date back to the 1500s. Theres evidence that they were used even earlier than that, but wars, unstable governments/nations and a lack of maintenance/recordkeeping means most have degraded into dirt.
