Honestly, considering how Equestria suddenly became the complete opposite of its g4 self in g5, I imagine something bad happened during Twilight’s reign.
 
My guess is she cracked under the pressure of being the leader, or it happened after her reign (its her replacement’s fault). It could also very well be some pony took advantage of the fact Twilight goes crazy when overwhelmed, and purposely overwhelmed her to keep her in a constant state of ankle holding hysteria “look at her, she can’t do her job, replace her with me!”.

I don’t understand why this comic of mine got more downvotes than upvotes. Have you all forgotten about all of Twilight’s psychotic episodes during past…well, episodes? Also, have you seen what Equestria has become at the beginning of G5?
