Although I’m hoping this doesn’t end up like the Sequel Trilogy where the previous generation caused the screwups that this new one has to clear up.
 
Personally, I’d like it to be where Twilight and her successors actually kept things in peace but a manipulative villain began to subtly turn the tribes against them and despite their best efforts, the villain caused the alicorns to go into hiding for a crime they never committed. Without them to keep things in check, the three tribes began to suffer from infighting until it gets to the point of separation.
