I think 80% of the people who threaten to “leave the fandom” would only quit watching the show. If someone is serious about leaving the fandom, either the show would have to get so bad that you can’t even look at pictures of ponies without getting angry, or the fandom has started to annoy them so much that they refuse to participate in it or acknowledge it other than an occasional “meh, I like ponies but I hate the fandom.”
 
One does not simply stop liking ponies. If anything, the show getting worse would probably spur the fan artists, writers, animators and voice actors into making more fan content to fill the void that the show once occupied (if, Celestia forbid, the show does jump the shark or get canceled).

I think it’ll get to the point where things will start to collapse. I’m sure there’s plenty of people who left the fandom without saying anything. You don’t yell “IM LEAVING TEH FANDOM”, you just do it.

Maybe we really have started reaching fandom critical mass– where the fandom as a whole starts to prefer its own works over the official show? Look at how many people have praised SWAG.MOV and Holy Matrapony as being better than the actual S3 finale.
 
The show’s writers are at a disadvantage because they have to please everyone. With fan content makers, they are free to find and pursue their own niches within the fandom, and they don’t really have to worry about whether or not the entire fandom will like it. Many supporting characters have fandoms that the show no longer satisfies, and the fans have to look to fan fiction and comics to see what they want.

It’s kind of weird because he has the insignia of Wonderbolts as a cutie mark… and that kinda bugs me. They probably will never explain that. They don’t even know what Starswirl was trying to achieve.

Fancypants got a cameo, Braeburn got a cameo, Apple Fritter’s male friend got a cameo… twice, Donut Joe/Pony Joe got a cameo. Poor Soarin’ getting the shaft.

That’s the thing! I think the writers tossed him.
 
He showed up as bg pony twice in Season 2 but he did not show up on the Season 2 poster. Also, Sibsy actually likes the ship and I do believe it was her doing… not in the script.

Come to think of it, most of the fan-favorite “bro” ponies seem to have gotten the shaft in Season 3. That may be because the season was so short (and I don’t mean to ignore Apple Family reunion, which had some good Big Mac moments and Braeburn’s reappaearance).
 
I would have liked to see the male characters get slightly expanded roles, but that opens up a new can of worms because then people will start complaining about pandering again. We never did get that Big Macintosh episode (unless you count Hearts and Hooves Day, although it was certainly not from his POV).

They gave a shout out to him in Season 2, where they showed him dancing with Rainbow Dash during the wedding. However, I sometimes wonder if that was just the animators being nice to us, and if the writing staff has tossed him. :(

I don’t mind that he’s goofy– however, we’ve only really seen him in his element once, and he got kicked in the face by Rarity. What little screentime he’s gotten is what defines his character, so a lot of people just think of him as that goofy wonderbolt who loves pie.

See… why can’t Soarin’ be like this in the show? It’s weird that he’s a Wonderbolt, yet he’s so goofy. It almost doesn’t make sense.

Well, he owes her one for saving his.
