Huh, that’s some impressive filtering for common household materials. Definitely didn’t expect to see dish towels that high up the list.

(That being said, we’re in agreement that rubbing even surgical masks against each other is probably a bad idea.)

Best mask materials.

(I can’t find it right now, but they also did a test somewhere that factored in how tight or loose a mask sealed and found that even looser fitting masks still protected the wearer by a small amount.)

You’re right though, that you still need to practice social distancing and that you shouldn’t let masks give you a false sense of confidence.

Actually, if they’re tight and we’ll made/fitted, they offer between 40 and 90% protection to the wearer as well. People keep regurgitating this, but I looked up studies done, and they tested various masks’ abilities to stop various particulate matter between 0.02 microns and 1 microns. They found that even somewhat loose masks like surgical masks often filtered 40% of the inhalation of particulates. Remember, in the context of viral load, that can make a big difference.

Personally I wear a full-face “gas mask,” with CBRN level protection, but you don’t need anywhere near that level of protection unless you are/you live with someone who has a bunch of risk factors and live in a high coronavirus-case area.

(Which I do. Over 2.5% of the population here has been confirmed with the virus, and I see my grandma downstairs almost every day to help her with groceries, dinner, etc.)

At the risk of pooping the party and making Pinkie Pie sad: Ordinary face masks only filter out large droplets and reduce the distance the virus can travel from you (smaller droplets don’t travel as far); they essentially offer zero protection against incoming droplets.

Those two might as well be sneezing into each others’ faces.
