True, while this fantastic backstory probably wouldn’t have worked for the show, Twilight’s canon flip-flopping treatment towards Spike does show a lack of definition for the relationship. Every other familial relationship was mostly consistent.
I guess really it comes down to, “what caused this incongruency?”

It sounds nice but, due to the nature of the show it wouldn’t really make sense if Twilight in the first episode was this compassionate care-taker that spent years as the primary caretaker of a child.
We got three stories focusing on the familial bond between Twilight and Spike: Sparkle’s Seven, Father Knows Best and Issue 40 of the Comic. Closest we get to something like this is the comic and that brief seen from father knows best. This! This would have solidified a lot of characterization. In the show it’s hard to tell if Spike is an assistant, friend, pet or brother.
