if it helps at all, lamia (like pegasus) is a proper name. she was a woman who zeus was boning, so his wife hera went and murdered all of lamia’s children because husband theft is wrong. hera also horribly disfigured lamia, because husband theft is wrong. she also cursed lamia so she could never close her eyes and go to sleep because husband theft is wrong, but zeus was like “fuck you hera” and cursed lamia with removable eyes, so she could just take them out of her head and go to sleep. lamia’s response to all this was to start devouring children left and right, and people were like “eh, can you blame her?”
people afterwards just sort of assumed she was part snake, since snakes are evil, and they eat big things so why not children? and that’s the only reason lamias are part snake.
naga in contrast are legendary creatures in hindu mythology explicitly stated to be half human and half cobra, generally described as beautiful and strong. they are only allowed to bite the evil and the terminally ill, and have a prosperous underground kingdom. the only oddity about them is that they can shape shift to full human or full cobra temporarily.
so on one hand mlp is basically fanart created by greek mythology fans, and lamia is a greek term for something that could be sorta snakey, while naga is a hindu word. on the other hand, ahuizotl is as far from greece as you can get, and lamia is basically the worst possible word you could use for snekpones.

In my personal preference and my own little written universes…
A ‘Lamia’ to me is a monster girl. It makes me think of lamia in games I played as a kid like final fantasy tactics advance
whereas a naga to me I’m used to seeing from people’s art of half human half snake OCs. So to me Nagas are more of a common race.
So with pony stuff a nagapony is a half pony and lower half of a snake. and a lamia pony would be more like a pony-like snake creature.

A Nagapon is actually a specific race from Buck Legacy though which is also a top half pony, lower half snake.
Edited
around here, snake pony is the tag for “wrong head on a snake.” (and there are woefully few of them)
some ninth century sculptures of naga portray them as having a torso.
Lamia includes the torso, naga is just the wrong head on a snake.
Or so I’ve been told.
what’s the difference between a naga and a lamia?
because it’s a nagapon which is an original species of buck legacy, though it seems the derpibooru staff have had all of those tags changed to lamia. even though this is not a lamia
_which is annoying but whatevers.
but it was a character I drew while making card illustrations for urban meadows for buck legacy cards but ended up being more of an original nagapon character of my own that never made it into the cards since the production ended X3
I was basically remaking this image but putting my main OC in place isntead X3 and updating the nagapon hypnotist’s design
