The part about the Crystal Ponies taking the Crystal Heart from a dragon who lived in the Crystalline Mountains (during Princess Amore reign) is adapted from the book “The Journal of the Two Sisters” (by Amy Keating Rogers), however later some “corrections” to the “official pony version” will follow. The “what is it” part is my idea and is not featured in the book.
Yes for Kludgetown: instead of an upwards-built shanty, the city was built inti the slowly-crystallizing remains of a deceased dragon, and the locals took to harvesting the crystals from it (which could have been one of the few explanations behind how the Staff of Sacanas has its abilities in the first place, the other being the largely-accepted Tree Of Harmony origin).
The simple fact that so much was crammed into th movie and barely any of it was used to explain the Storm Kings’ background and source for his power, on top of… evrything about the movie having already been done before in other movies or episodes just makes the movie feel weaker. This movie had the potential to have become something greater, and one of the best ways that I can think of would be if the 2017 movie was the one that came out first instead of the Equestria Girls Movie: simply replace the Friendship Festival with a Coronation at the beginning of the movie, remove any mentions of the events from Seasons 4 through 8 (because why must they go find the Hippogriffs when they are already friends with the Yaks, the Dragons, and the Changelings? On top of the fact that the Pillars of Equestria have recently returned and what is really stopping Tempest from abandoning her pursuit of Twilight Sparkle and instead use Flurryheart: Tempest has already betrayed what could best be described as the gods of her people; why not go all the way and become the very monster she had set her sights upon?), in many respects the 2017 movie would have been the perfect movie to help ease audiences into accepting Alicorn Princess Twilight Sparkle sooner from the outset as all of her emotional turmoil and stress from her recent ascendancy on top of holding the weight of the crown and leadership of her subjects above all else and her responsibility to their safety would have the moment where she calls out her friends for not taking this journey at all seriously have that much more believable emotional baggage to it.
