According to Horse MD, horse hives are the result of a systemic reaction to allergen, mostly animal feed, insect bites, pollen, molds, deworming compounds, antibiotics, bedding, heat, light or even excercise. They are characterized as localized soft pit swellings on the skin, as seen in this evidence photo.
 
Fortunately, you can easily root out the cause after interdermal testing and can be treated with some anti-histamines (e.g. Dexamethasone) or steroids
