I think foals should be able to walk very soon. After all they still have 4 limbs on the ground. At the same time human babies learn to crawl pony foals would learn to walk. If anything it would happen even earlier as they can watch their parents which human babies can’t do.
 
I really would like him to go into further dept. What does estrus mean in non sexual scenario’s and ways? Does Twilight have to wear a thin diaper? Do other mares find the scent repulsive? Does she have to bother changing her mare diaper? Does it also have psychological effects like making her more aggressive and less patient?

Discussions about Estrus and how it may apple to MLP ponies compared to Real life is ok, but probably not the best in some image comments. Especially one 2 months old. Better for the forums.

what most don’t address about heat is that when not in heat, a horse is not going to want to have sex, like… at all. so anon here would be high and dry 11 months out of the year.
 
my usual explanation for yearly estrus is it’s evolved to become a social bonding ritual, from their pre-pony ancestors who didn’t live as long. there’s also the possibility that ponies aren’t as viable, so have to try for multiple seasons before a pregnancy takes. then there’s the thought that ponies being so complex might take years to gestate, which would exclude pregnant ponies from estrus, but for those who aren’t…
 
oh and if you want to get really morbid, ponies get eaten by chimeras, manticores, dragons, cragadiles, crocodiles, timber wolves, wolves, serpents, gryphons, bears, yetis, sirens, dinosaurs… I mean how many of them could possibly make it to adulthood? you’ve seen how dumb foals can be! maybe they’re supposed to be suicidally bold, because of the surplus!

According to Wikipedia, estrus in horses “generally occurs during the spring and summer months, although some mares may be sexually receptive into the late fall.” So there is a good chance that not all mares in a given space will be in heat. It’s not exact by any means.

The entire reason I commented in the first place was because I was wondering how much being in estrus would affect ponies.
 
Related to this, one issue that hasn’t come up - the lifespan and aging of MLP ponies versus actual ponies. Real horses are “mature” at age four, and according to Wikipedia, live 25-30 years roughly. If we assume that MLP ponies age the same as humans, than that changes their reproductive dynamic. Given their long time to reach maturity, and the fact that baby MLPonies aren’t able to stand and move on their own like baby horses are, getting impregnated every estrus isn’t as viable, and I’d imagine the “normal” rate of producing foals is slower.
 
As such, I think there would be less pressure for a mare to become pregnant - supported by the general lack of large families we’ve seen in the show. I would think that the increase in libido during heat is therefore manageable for MLPonies - or alternatively can be staved off with toys and penetration without insemination.
 
At least that’s what I think. I tend to roll my eyes at the cliche of “being in heat makes you want to bang everyone all the time” which has parallels (though not necessarily involving estrus) in other fandoms with notable nonhumans, like Star Trek or Gargoyles. So I admit I am looking for a way around that.

it’s even crazier than that. there are plenty of bad genes that don’t help us at all in any way, that keep getting passed to the next generation. evolution’s a work in progress, and it takes a long time to eliminate traits that aren’t obviously, terribly bad. and then when the definition of “bad” changes… as I like to quote, “evolution isn’t survival of the fittest. it’s survival of the barely adequate!”
 
case in point, humans still have the hips of a quadruped, tweaked somewhat for bipedal movement, and also abnormally large heads. the only mammal that has a harder time giving birth than humans is the spotted hyena. I can tell you a lot more humans die of complications during childbirth than there are homosexual couples not having children.

So like a gene for a good trait, but sometimes results in a bad thing, will be selected for since the ones who got the good trait will carry it on - so long as the bad trait isn’t so common as to cause major problems (only having to give birth half as many times to get the same number of functioning adults is an advantage - UNLESS circumstances such as resource shortage favor lower population).

I agree. twilight’s in estrus, and that’s the important thing: how absolutely hounded she is by those feelings, and how badly she needs release. whether there’s some genetic imperative in a given situation is just picky details, because in this situation, there is no denying it is very imperative to twilight to get herself mounted and impregnated.

evolution is just a gradual change. It has nothing to do with this.
 
But this is a fantasy setting so going for what makes sense is all we have to go by.
